Okinawa-Honto – Main Island

Okinawa-Honto – Main Island

Okinawa’s main island is the largest and most populated of its many beautiful islands.

It stretches more than 100 kilometres north-south, and is surrounded by many small islands, some of which can be accessed via bridges. Don’t be fooled by its length though, it does take at least 3 hours to drive from top to bottom.

From the dramatic karst landscapes and thick forests of the north to the chic seafront promenades in Chatan and the ramparts of former castles at places like Shurijo Castle Park in the south, the landscape of the main island varies from region to region.

We highly recommend staying in the northern part of Okinawa for a few nights to explore areas such as the UNESCO World Heritage listed Yambaru National Park, experience some blue zone villages, a visit to the Motobu Peninsula, purchase some traditional arts and crafts and enjoy oceanfront dining.

Our sightseeing recommendations:

Ufuya Restaurant

Nakayama Coffee Farm

Aikaze Indigo Dyeing Farm

American Village Okinawa

Okinawa Churami Aquarium

Emi No Mise Restaurant, Ogimi Village
